Museum Practices and Transformations in the Coverage of World War II

Conferences / 27 May 2026

The National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, with the funding of the Foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” (Berlin, Germany), is organizing a two-day international conference “Museum Practices and Transformations in the Coverage of the Second World War.”

The event will bring together scholars and museum professionals, representatives of 43 leading institutions from 15 countries around the world, including such world-renowned establishments as the Imperial War Museums (London, United Kingdom), the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum (Oświęcim, Poland), the Terezin Memorial (Terezín, Czech Republic), Miami University (Oxford, Ohio, USA), the University of Victoria (Canada), and the Network of European Museum Organisations NEMO (Berlin, Germany).

The conference will serve as a platform for professional discussion and exchange of experience between museums, memorials, and research institutions across Europe and the world. The focus of the discussion is the rethinking of the Second World War, particularly in post-communist countries, the memorialization of armed conflicts of the modern era, and the preservation of historical memory in times of global instability, when anti-democratic forces seek to turn history into an ideological weapon.

Particular attention will be paid to the experience of Ukraine, which, under the conditions of large-scale Russian aggression, is shaping its own culture of memory and implementing unique practices of museumification of the war in real time.

The conference opening will take place on 27 May at 09:30.

The working languages of the conference are Ukrainian and English with simultaneous interpretation provided. An online broadcast of the event is planned for the general public on the Museum’s web resources.
